A man is in critical but stable condition at Mayo General Hospital after being stabbed repeatedly in the chest in the early hours of yesterday morning. The 39-year-old victim crawled some 90m (300ft) after the attack in Manor Village, on the outskirts of Castlebar.

The occupants of a nearby house, whom the victim had been visiting along with his suspected assailant, raised the alarm at around 3.30am. Supt John Quirke, who is heading the Garda investigation, said the victim sustained at least three wounds and lost "a considerable amount of blood".

It is understood there was an altercation in the doorway of the house the victim was visiting and this disturbance continued outside.

The injured man crawled to an adjacent house and was brought to hospital by ambulance.

A man was later arrested and was being held yesterday for questioning at Castlebar Garda station. He is understood to be in his late 30s or early 40s.
