A 21-year-old prisoner hanged himself from a pipe in a toilet beside his Mountjoy Prison cell shortly after a visit from his girlfriend, an inquest at Dublin City Coroner's Court was told yesterday.
The south Co Dublin man was "a bit quiet" after the visit on October 16th, his cell-mate told the inquest, but he seemed "all right" when he asked to use the toilet.
The inquest heard the pipe in the toilet was exposed during maintenance work The jury in returning a verdict of suicide and recommended that all maintenance work in prisons should be assessed for risk by Health and Safety officers.
