Mr John Major, the former British prime minister, paid a courtesy call on the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern at Government Buildings yesterday.

Mr Major was in Dublin to promote his recently published autobiography and to speak at a Dublin Chamber of Commerce function. He and Mr Ahern had informal discussions for about 20 minutes, mainly about Northern Ireland.

Mr Major also signed the Book of Condolences for the late Mr Jack Lynch.
