Major's Scottish foray criticised

John Major's foray into Scotland to try to drum up electoral support there was doomed to failure, the SNP leader, Mr Alex Salmond, claimed yesterday. Mr Major succeeded in turning the tide for the Tories in the last election by "waving the Union Jack in an appeal to middle England," Mr Salmond said. "The Tories' anti-Scottish record is established in the soul of the body politic in Scotland."
