The main Leinster House entrance on Kildare Street, Dublin, is to be upgraded by the Office of Public Works before the end of the summer.

The existing, rather drab security hut will be demolished and replaced by a new, single-storey structure, while the gate stonework will be refurbished. The new building is expected to be similar in style to a glass building built in recent years in Government Buildings on Merrion Street.

The OPW yesterday sought tenders from companies interested in carrying out the works, though it refused to put a price on the work.

A new, retractable security barrier capable of blocking vehicles was installed recently at the Kildare Street gates in place of an older, smaller barrier.
