The Government was encouraged to turn Áras an Uachtaráin into a geriatric hospital after it disclosed plans to buy a Government jet in 1972.

The Government agreed plans to buy an executive jet aircraft on December 12th, 1972. However, it rescinded the decision in March, 1973.

In the meantime, a Dublin pharmacy owner, Mr Patrick O'Brien, wrote to the Taoiseach, Mr Lynch, criticising the decision.

He said the jet would not help "unfortunate people who have to struggle on small means and little heat, particularly at this time of year".

"Please, I implore you to consider abolishing the office of the President and turning the presidential residence into a geriatric unit."

Mr Patrick O'Brien told the Taoiseach "you would be surprised how much genuine goodwill this act would engender" and helpfully suggested the Lord Mayor of Dublin be used as first citizen wherever necessary.
