The Irish team's early joy at Heather Boyle's World Cup silver medal was tempered this afternoon when Sam Lynch and Gearoid Towey missed out on a medal after losing out in a photo finish.
The lightweight double skulls pair were pipped to the bronze medal in Lucerne by just 0.11 seconds with the US double of Steve Tucker and Greg Rackman claiming a place on the podium.
Three-time world champions and current world record holders Petanari and Luini of Italy took the gold convincingly with the Japanese team coming home second.
That left Lynch and Towey in a battle with the American's for third and despite the Irish pair closing in the final stages, the line came just soon and the American's held on grimly for bronze by the narrowest of margins.
Earlier today, Heather Boyle claimed silver medal to cap a fine weekend for the Galway woman.
Competing in the lightweight single sculls, Boyle led the field with 500m remaining but faded somewhat in the closing stages.
Boyle took silver behind Croatia's Mirna Rajle. Daniela Nachazelova of the Czech Republic was third.
