A MAN died five weeks after becoming ill with a form of lung cancer which has a high association with previous asbestos exposure, an inquest in Dublin has been told.

Vincent Joyce (70), Brookhaven Lawn, Blanchardstown, Dublin, died at the Mater hospital on June 30th, 2010.

Dublin City Coroner’s Court heard Mr Joyce was taken to Connolly hospital by ambulance on May 27th after coming home from holidays, as he had shortness of breath. He had not been unwell before that, apart from a chest infection. He was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer associated with previous asbestos exposure, which led to his death.

The inquest heard Mr Joyce had worked in the car manufacturing industry more than 40 years earlier and in the shipping industry before 1971, where he may have had exposure to asbestos.
