Passenger figures for Luas, which is due to open its second Dublin line on Tuesday next, are reaching 120,000 a week - close to the annual target of approximately seven million for the Harcourt Street route.
Should the predicted figures of 13 million annual passenger journeys hold up for the Tallaght line, Luas would be well on its way to the overall target of 20 million passenger journeys a year.
However, Dublin Bus carries 85,000 passengers between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. each weekday morning, making the more humble form of getting about the city the success story of public transport.
The other major success is the DART service. Of more than 35 million Dublin train journeys last year, some 23 million, or 140,000 each weekday, were taken on the DART. Annual DART passenger numbers are forecast to increase to 50 million by 2022, assuming an average economic growth level of 5 per cent.
