A man shot in north Antrim today is believed to have been ambushed by loyalist paramilitaries.

He was hit in the back as he sat in his car in the village of Bushmills and and taken to hospital where his condition is not life-threatening.

It is understood the attack could be linked to a fall out over money.

Two shotgun blasts were fired at the man (26) through the passenger side window just after 6 a.m.

Police don not believe the motive to be sectarian but SDLP MLA Mr Sean Farren said the shooting may be linked to a local feud among loyalists.

He urged police to "lean heavily" on paramilitary and criminal elements.

Mr Farren added: "The continuing use of guns in our society shows the absolute need to end all forms of paramilitarism and the criminal activities it has produced."
