A family in Portadown, Co Armagh, escaped a gun attack on their house early this morning.

A police spokesman said a man, a woman and their five children were inside the house on Westland Road when the shooting occurred at 12.55 a.m.

Three spent .45 calibre cases were found at the scene, the spokesman said.

The shooting took place in a loyalist area of the town, which, according to unionist sources, has been the focus of a number of attacks involving feuding paramilitary factions.

The family blamed loyalist paramilitaries for the attack. Some weeks ago the house was the scene of a petrol bomb attack, and the family believe it is an attempt to force them from the area.
