Cathal and Helen live in Cork city and have three children aged eight, nine and 11. Helen works in a computer supplies company in the city centre while Cathal was made redundant four years ago and has not been in employment since. They really wanted to see a boost for low earners in the Budget but feel there isn't much change. The rises in personal and PAYE allowances, and the 2 per cent reduction in the tax rate, give the family an extra £64 a month in their pockets. They are very happy with the rise in child benefit and the extra £73 per month from next June will be most welcome. But Cathal and Helen are concerned about rising inflation and feel their outgoings are increasing all the time.
