Milan - The Frejus road tunnel, which connects Italy and France through the Alps, was closed to traffic for about nine hours yesterday because of a fire in a lorry. No one was injured and traffic resumed on the key freight route by early afternoon.
The fire began when the truck, coming from the French side, was only a short way into the 13-kilometre tunnel. The nearby Mont Blanc tunnel has been closed since the fire disaster there last year.
