A MAN in his 30s died after his a 4x4 was in collision with a lorry outside Mallow on the Cork to Limerick road yesterday morning.
The crash involving a Land Cruiser and a lorry containing a large container, happened on a notoriously bad stretch of road, known as Ballybeg road, on the Cork side of Buttevant at 6.15am.
The driver of the 4x4 was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver of the lorry was brought to Mallow General Hospital suffering from shock.
The lorry driver, believed to be from Britain, was travelling from Foynes to Millstreet. He was arrested shortly after the crash on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. He was taken to Mallow Garda station, where he was being questioned under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Emergency services, the Garda and ambulances attended the scene of the crash.
The dead man is believed to be from the mid-Cork area and was driving in the direction of Buttevant when the collision occurred. Diversions were put in place as gardaí investigated the circumstances of the crash.
The two vehicles involved remained at the scene while a forensic collision investigation was carried out yesterday. The road remained sealed off until late yesterday evening.
The man’s body was taken to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem examination.
