London - London's spectacular New Year's Eve celebrations have been cancelled because of safety fears, a spokeswoman for Mayor Ken Livingstone said yesterday.
The series of events to welcome the New Year has been hampered by ongoing rows over safety concerns between Mr Livingstone, the transport authorities, the emergency services and trade unions.
London Underground insisted that it could not cope with the million-plus revellers expected to converge on the capital for the event.
