A community CCTV system currently in operation in the troubled Moyross housing estate will soon have a live feed to Henry Street Garda station in Limerick, it was revealed yesterday.

There are 35 cameras in Moyross monitoring areas such as Pineview Gardens and Delmege Park, which have witnessed an upsurge in violence in recent weeks.

At present, they are monitored by staff at the local community centre, but Minister for Justice Michael McDowell confirmed yesterday that work is currently under way to link these cameras with Limerick's main Garda station. It is hoped the live feed to Henry Street Garda station will help clamp down on the recent upsurge in anti-social behaviour in Moyross.

More cameras are expected to be installed following a recent allocation of €200,000 for the CCTV project.

The Tánaiste also revealed during his visit to Limerick yesterday that a "figure of national standing" will be appointed shortly to oversee ongoing initiatives in the Moyross area.
