LIMERICK city is to have a museum of Georgian Limerick in a house in Perry Square. The house was bought recently by Limerick Civic Trust and is being refurbished at a cost of £350,000.
As well as being a visitor attraction, the museum will be available for civic events.
Architecture students at Limerick RTC carried out a survey of the premises. The 15 month project is providing work for 18 people under the Government's Job Initiative Scheme.
Mr Denis Leonard, director of the civic trust, said this would be the first theme house a Limerick city. "It is a bigger project than just doing up a house. Its restoration will act as a catalyst for the restoration of Newtown Perry, the designated Georgian conservation area.
"We hope all the property owners will now come in and restore their buildings. A lot of houses have been greatly changed to meet modern day needs, which I believe is wrong. These Georgian premises can be used as they stand with proper and careful refurbishment," he said.
