A murder inquiry has begun in Limerick following the death of a man (18) in hospital from injuries he suffered in an assault last Friday.

Darren Coughlan from Moyross was left with serious head injuries after he was attacked by three youths on the Old Cratloe Road, close to the Limerick Institute of Technology.

Gardai have not yet established a motive for the attack. Statements were taken from a number of people who were with the victim moments before the attack.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information to contact Mayorstone Garda station at 061-456 980.
