Liffey jumpers leave locals hopping mad

Youths filmed jumping off building into Dublin river

Irish people and the sun - a mix that often leads to madness.

Never was this truer than yesterday, when spectators were left aghast as a group of young daredevils leapt from the roof of a nearby building into the River Liffey on North Wall Quay.

In a YouTube clip that has since gone viral, a group of young men can be seen jumping off the building, which houses a restaurant, narrowly clearing the fence that separates the river from the boardwalk.

But some locals are less than impressed.

“Sooner or later, someone will be hurt. They’re going to kill themselves,” said the restaurant manager.

“This has been going on for three or four years. I’m worried sick, because if anything happens I would be implicated,” she said.

She said gardai appear powerless to stop the jumpers. “I’ve called the gardai a number of times and they respond very quickly, but they never catch them. The minute they approach the kids, they’re already gone.”

There is clearly a significant element of danger in this horseplay, which appears to be provoked by the rare emergence of good weather.

“This happens a lot when the sun comes out,” according to one local, who gave his name as Vlad. “It happens all over the place around here.”
