SIXTY-SIX students from Libya due to begin the Leaving Cert next week will take the exam in Ireland or Malta, according to the State Examinations Commission.

Up to now the Leaving Cert has been taken by students at the International School of the Martyrs in Tripoli each year since 1997.

Last night the commission said it would not be possible to hold exams in Tripoli this year because of the highly unstable situation in Libya.

The commission has advised the school that candidates can take their examinations in either Ireland or Malta.

The 66 Libyan students include 12 who have already travelled to Ireland to sit the exam.

The commission says it is working to facilitate the holding of examinations in Malta.

The school authorities, along with families of the candidates, are making the necessary visa and travel arrangements for the candidates to take the exam in either Ireland or Malta, it says.
