London - A mystery telephone bidder last night paid £1,450,000 for the piano on which John Lennon composed Imagine. The unnamed bidder will be keeping the piano in Britain, according to the man who took his telephone bid.

Last night's sale of Lennon and Beatles memorabilia at the Hard Rock CafΘ in Piccadilly, saw the sale of the upright Steinway piano, just a week after what would have been Lennon's 60th birthday. On Monday, the piano was transported from the Beatles Story Museum in Liverpool.
