The death has occurred of one of the Republic's most prominent doctors. Dr Cormac Macnamara was a general practitioner in the largest family practice in Waterford city and a leading occupational physician in the south-east.
A past president of both the Medical Union and the Irish Medical Organisation, he was a major figure in medical politics for over 30 years.
He was also past president of the Irish College of General Practitioners and had recently chaired a Government working group on access to higher education.
Dr Macnamara was previously a member of both the Postgraduate Medical and Dental Board and Comhairle na nOspidéal.
He is survived by his wife Mary and his children, John, Niall, Corrie, Neasa and Mary.
