Landslides set off by torrential rains at the weekend have killed at least 11 people and left 11 missing in southern Japan.

Hundreds of troops, police and firefighters resumed rescue operations at dawn today, using bulldozers, cranes and shovels to search for people.

The navy sent a destroyer off Kumamoto prefecture, 560 miles southwest of Tokyo, to search for anyone who had been washed out to sea.

Rescuers have been hampered by heavy rain that they fear could trigger more landslides. Train operations remained disrupted and highways in the region were closed.
