The Laffoy Commission split into two three-member committees:
The investigation committee, which is investigating nearly 1,800 specific allegations of abuse, and the confidential commitee, for the 1,000 people who do not want to go through the ordeal of a full inquiry.
The investigation committee, which has suspended its work, was headed by Judge Laffoy. Its other two members were Dr Imelda Ryan, a child psychiatrist specialising in child abuse, and Mr Fred Lowe, a senior clinical psychologist with the East Coast Area Health Board.
The confidential committee is continuing its work. Its members are Ms Norah Gibbons, a childcare and adoption expert, Prof Edward Tempany, a retired consultant paediatrician, and Ms Anne McLoughlin, who is a social worker.
