Labour could be heading for another three-figure majority, according to an eve-of-polling-day opinion poll to be published tomorrow.

The ICM poll for The Guardian put Labour on 38 per cent, six points ahead of the Conservatives on 32 per cent - slightly lower than their share of the popular vote in the 2001 election.

The Liberal Democrats were on 22 per cent - their highest share of the vote since the 1983 heyday of the SDP-Liberal Alliance.

The Guardian said that if these figures were translated into a uniform swing across the country they would give Labour a majority of 130.

However all the main parties believe the outcome is likely to be much closer. ICM interviewed a random sample of 1,532 adults aged 18 and over by telephone between May 1st and 4th.
