Berlin - East Germany's last communist ruler, Egon Krenz, will seek to have a 1999 manslaughter conviction challenged by the European Court of Human Rights, his lawyer has said.

Krenz, serving a six-and-a-half-year term a sentence of 6 1/2 years for shoot-to-kill orders given to border guards manning the Berlin Wall against defectors, will be freed from a Berlin prison from today until Thursday that so he can attend a hearing in Strasbourg tomorrow.
