London - The former gang leader, Reggie Kray (66), who is suffering from terminal cancer of the bladder, will remain in hospital "for the foreseeable future", staff in Norfolk confirmed yesterday, Rachel Donnelly reports.

The British Home Secretary, Mr Jack Straw, released the former gangster from prison on compassionate grounds on Saturday. The notorious criminal, who ruled the East End of London with his brother, Ronnie, during the 1960s, is being treated at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital near Wayland Prison in Norfolk where he was serving a life sentence for murder. At present he is too ill to leave hospital to be with his wife, Roberta (41), who lives near Wayland Prison.

A spokeswoman for the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital said Kray was "stable" but he would be remaining in hospital for further treatment.

At the weekend Roberta Kray said she had mixed emotions about her husband's release: "I'm pleased that he has got his freedom. It is something he has been waiting so long for. But he is seriously ill."
