Vienna - Warning Kosovo could "set the region ablaze", President Vojislav Kostunica of Yugoslavia yesterday urged NATO and the United Nations to stop ethnic Albanian gunmen killing Serb police in a tense Kosovo-Serbia border zone.

Mr Kostunica said he had sent letters to the NATO chief, Lord George Robertson, and the UN Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan, pressing for action and pointing out that Serbia was sticking to a security agreement for the zone which totally tied its hands.
