Gardai in Dublin were last night investigating the death of a man who was beaten and stabbed during an attack in Fairview on Wednesday night.

The dead man was named locally as Mr Patrick Farrell (38), Dunne Street, the father of one child.

It is understood he became involved in a dispute with another man just before midnight on Wednesday.

He suffered at least one stab wound and is also believed to have sustained head injuries.

He was taken to the Mater Hospital. However, he was declared dead shortly after arrival.

Garda forensic experts examined the scene at Ballybough Road yesterday. An implement was recovered from the area where Mr Farrell's body was found.

A number of other domestic implements were also recovered from the scene.

A post-mortem was under way last night. Gardaí believe just one man was involved in the attack.

The search continues for the murder weapon.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to contact Fitzgibbon Garda Station on 6668400.
