Paris - Islamic rebels in Algeria killed 80 soldiers, took 40 hostage and seized a large quantity of weapons in a recent raid on a military post south of Algiers, the Arabic-language newspaper Asharq al Awsat reported yesterday.

It was the worst reported rebel attack on Algerian soldiers since March 1993, when guerrillas slashed the throats of more than 40 servicemen in a barracks south of Algiers.
