A Co Kildare man was given a five-year jail term with three years suspended at the Special Criminal Court yesterday after he admitted robbery and hijacking in Co Limerick last year. Emmet Ronan (23), of Clane, pleaded guilty to the theft of £3,900 and $400 from Mr Sean O'Doherty at Clarina, Co Limerick, on April 27th last year. He also admitted hijacking his car.

Det Sgt Thomas O'Connor said Mr O'Doherty was at his home in a remote area one morning when two masked gunmen burst in. They tied him up and interrogated him. He told them where a safe was and they took the cash and car.
