The body found on the eastern slopes of Carrauntoohill yesterday morning has been confirmed as that of missing climber Paul Fergus (23) from Cheshire.

Mr Fergus climbed Ireland's highest mountain on his own on Tuesday from the western side. Relatives in Waterford raised the alarm when he did not arrive on Wednesday night as arranged.

The body was discovered by Kerry Mountain Rescue at about 10.30am yesterday morning.

Mr Fergus was an experienced climber and was well equipped but it is now believed he made a navigational error and fell up to 350 metres down a series of ledges.

His parents travelled from the UK to identify his remains last night.
