Fine Gael leader has refused to concede that a Fianna Fáil-led government with Bertie Ahern at the helm is a foregone conclusion.
As Mr Ahern searches for possible coalition partners to form a Government in the 30th Dail, Enda Kenny said today there were "distinct possibilities" available for an alternative administration.
"Obviously the independents and PDs are critical so obviously I'll be talking to Pat Rabbitte and we'll talk to Trevor Sargent and Mary Harney who has now assumed leadership responsibility for the PDs," Mr Kenny said during an RTE radio interview in Castlebar, Co Mayo this morning.
He refused to accept that Mr Ahern would necessarily form the next government adding: "I accept that Fianna Fáil have 78 seats, I accept that we've gained 20, and I accept that the Rainbow Alliance as it was termed before the election has 77 seats.
"So you know this is a case where you've got to reflect on what we're at here
"Do you want 15 years of one party in government or are we prepared to change that because 60 per cent of people voted against the Government.
"The figures stack up here...I can see distinct possibilities here.
"What I'm really interested in here is how best we can explore these possibilities with a view to providing Ireland and the country with a real government that will be stable and that can deal with the issues as we presented them in the run-in to the election."
