MIAMI - John F. Kennedy turned down a 1961 rapprochement offer by the Argentine born Cuban revolutionary leader Che Guevara after the failed US backed invasion of Cuba, US documents reveal.

[The Cuban President Fidel] "Castro's government was prepared to forswear any political alliance with the Soviet bloc, pay for confiscated American properties ... and consider curbing Cuba's support for leftist insurgencies in other countries", the Miami Herald said.

But the previously classified papers said Mr Kennedy rejected Guevara's offer in favour of a hard line policy against Dr Castro.
