Roy Keane was ushered off the pitch at St Mary's yesterday after the Manchester United star responded to barracking from Southampton fans by mocking their relegation plight.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder, an unused substitute in the 2-1 win,  was warming down towards the end of the match.

Southampton fans jeered Keane, who responded by pointing down and waving goodbye.

He was quickly escorted down the tunnel by stewards and away from a 500-strong group of fans who had been calling for the resignation of Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe.
