Poland’s acting president Bronislaw Komorowski should win the June presidential election in the first round after extending his lead over Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the twin brother of the late president Lech, a poll showed today.
Mr Komorowski, the parliamentary speaker who became acting president when Lech Kaczynski died in a plane crash last month, is supported by 56 per cent of Poles, according to an ARC poll published by the Polska newspaper today.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the head of the main opposition party, enjoys the backing of 29 per cent, while all other declared candidates did not surpass 6 per cent.
The ARC poll, conducted on a sample of 506 people, is the second to show Mr Komorowski winning the election in the first round.
In an ARC poll ahead of the plane disaster in Russia, which also killed 95 other people, Mr Komorowski was backed by 49 per cent and Lech Kaczynski, who was expected to seek a second term, by 31 per cent.
Poles are due to vote for a new president in an election on June 20th. If no candidate wins outright majority, a second round would be held two weeks later.
Although the prime minister and his government hold most power, the president can veto laws and also has a say in foreign and security policy.
