A rocket hit a residential area in the Afghan capital Kabul overnight, killing three members of a family.

The victims included a married couple and their child, a  police spokesman said.

Two other family members were wounded in the strike which hit a house in the western part of the capital.

The spokesman said the rockets were fired from Paghman, a mountain resort in the western outskirts of Kabul.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Taliban guerrillas have in the past occasionally hit the capital with rockets but they rarely cause casualties.
