TOKYO - A strong quake, measuring 4

TOKYO - A strong quake, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, hit the Izu chain of islands south of Tokyo early today, but there was no danger of tsunami tidal waves, the meteorological agency said.

The epicentre of the quake, which took place at 8.11 a.m. (2311 GMT), was near Niijima island, the agency said. The quake was located some 10 km under the seabed.

There were no immediate reports of damage, it added.
