JOHANNESBURG - One prisoner was killed and several were wounded yesterday when police and warders stormed cells in which one of South Africa's most notorious criminals was holding five hostages, a prison spokesman said.

Thembesile "Tyson" Makaluza, who had taken three prison's employees and two electricians hostage since Monday in a bid to escape from St Albans prison near Port Elizabeth, was one of those wounded. The spokesman said the hostages were released unharmed.
