A PAIR of silk pyjamas and a bed used by the late popstar Michael Jackson has fetched a combined €8,900 at an auction in Co Westmeath.
The pyjamas were auctioned along with a solid federal-style carved mahogany bed used by the singer during his stay at Coolatore House, near Moate, five years ago.
Jackson and his children spent a number of months in rural Co Westmeath while recording at Grouse Lodge studios in Rosemount in 2006.
At the time there were a number of sightings of the singer relaxing with his children at the cinema, bowling alley and a number of other venues around the midlands.
Auctioneer Damien Matthews of Co Meath-based Matthews Auction Rooms said there was “extraordinary” interest in the 600 lots from Coolatore House auctioned on Sunday.
According to Mr Matthews, the popstar enjoyed his stay at the house and “said he had never slept better in his life then he did in Coolatore”.
Mr Matthews said people had travelled from all over the country to view the house and items, and although “a lot of people just travelled for curiosity”, 300 registered bidders attended the auction.
While the pyjamas and bed were the highlights of the auction, items such as Jackson’s deskset and mirrors also attracted keen bidding.
“All the small stuff made two or three times what it usually would,” said Mr Matthews.
The mahogany bed will remain in Ireland, having been sold to an undisclosed Irish bidder for €6,200.
A bed of its type would generally have fetched between €500 and €800, according to the auctioneers.
The pyjamas were snapped up by an American entertainment company for €2,700 and were being folded and boxed for delivery yesterday.
