Rome - L'Unita, the historic left-wing daily which survived Fascism and played a key role in Italian politics for 76 years, was put into receivership yesterday to save it from closing.

Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, L'Unita was the darling of the left. Today it sells some 50,000 copies a day against a peak of some 268,000 in the mid-1970s.
