A young Jewish settler has died of his wounds after being hit by Palestinian gunfire near Shilo settlement, north of the West Bank town of Ramallah.
The man, aged 20, was driving his car when he was ambushed and hit in the chest, the Israeli army said. He was rushed to a Jerusalem hospital but later died.
Earlier, Israeli troops stormed up to the doorstep of President Yasser Arafat's West Bank headquarters in Ramallah, killing one of the Palestinian leader's bodyguards and wounding six other men in a hit-and-run strike.
Palestinians near the scene said all Israeli tanks and troops have now left the battered compound but military sources said the pullout remained partial.
Mr Arafat was not hurt in the raid on his offices in Ramallah and Israeli political sources said the army had no intention of harming him.
Israeli tanks stormed Mr Arafat's compound and shelled his offices yesterday after a Palestinian suicide car bomber killed at least 16 people in Israel.
Aides to Mr Arafat said parts of the complex containing the Palestinian president's sleeping quarters were badly damaged by shelling and machinegun fire, but the Palestinian leader was unhurt.
Israeli Prime Minister Mr Ariel Sharon delayed his departure on a trip to the United States for talks with President George W Bush by one day until Saturday. A White House spokesman condemned the suicide bombing and sharply criticised Mr Arafat's performance in office.
