Jewish worshippers who were among 12 Israelis killed in a Palestinian shooting attack in Hebron were not the militants' target, a spokeswoman for the Israeli army today.

"Looking at who they targetted and where they directed their shots, one can conclude the worshippers were not the targets of the Palestinians terrorists," the spokeswoman said, stressing nonetheless that "the worshippers were not far away from the shooting and three died in the attack."

Nine border police and soldiers, including a colonel, were among the dead. Fourteen people were also wounded, all of them soldiers or policemen, according to an army statement. Three Islamic Jihad activists were killed in the ensuing gunbattle.
