The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children has called for individual legal representation for victims of child abuse.

"This single measure would ensure that victims are properly represented and protected from aggressive and traumatising cross examination within a highly adversarial system," its chief executive, Mr Cian O Tighearnaigh, said at a public meeting in Limerick.

He also called for the immediate introduction of mandatory reporting of child abuse.
