Michael Barry (68), from Waterford, was struck by a car at about 10.30am on Tuesday as he walked down the street in the seaside town of Torrevieja, 48km (30 miles) south of Alicante, on the east coast.

He was severely injured in the incident and later died in hospital.

Police were yesterday searching for a British driver who they said had fled the scene.
