An Irishman was among a group of suspects being held in Spain last night as part of an operation into international drug trafficking.

The man was arrested with two Dutch nationals and two Spanish nationals near Alicante in southern Spain last Wednesday. He is in his mid-50s and from Drogheda, Co Louth.

Security sources say he is a truck driver and is suspected to have been part of a plan to transport a consignment of cannabis to Ireland via a car ferry in his truck.
