Police in Sweden have released an Irishman who was being questioned over the death of a new-born baby girl.

The baby, who police suspect was killed within a few hours of being born, was found in a pedestrian subway in a suburb of Stockholm last December. A murder inquiry was begun.

The Irishman (25) was arrested near the town of Uppsala, about 50 miles north of the capital, yesterday. A British woman he was travelling with was also taken in for questioning.

The two have now been released. They were carrying British passports, which have been impounded by police.

It is understood they have been ordered to remain in Sweden until the results of tests to compare their blood with some found on the baby's shawl are known.

Swedish police said they will release more information on the case later today.
