An Irishman has drowned in a swimming pool on the Spanish island of Lanzarote.

An Irishman has drowned in a swimming pool on the Spanish island of Lanzarote.

The man, who has not yet officially been named, is believed to have drowned in a swimming pool at around 4am in the island's Puerto del Carmen resort.

It is understood the man, believed to be from Dublin, was on a family holiday at the time and police say the incident is being treated as a tragic accident.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is providing consular assistance to the victim's family, but did not release any details on the his death.
