THE Irish trucks trapped in a Spanish blockade have been released by a combined force of police and soldiers.
Mr Jimmy Quinn, president of the Irish Road Haulage Association, said the seven drivers concerned were extremely angry at the way they were treated by Spanish drivers, who damaged their vehicles, spiked their tyres and broke windscreens.
He said nothing similar had occurred during the recent French blockade. Mr Quinn said representations by the association had resulted in police and soldiers getting the Irish trucks out of the blockade.
Mr Bobbie Molloy, the Progressive Democrats' spokesman on transport, called on the Taoiseach, Mr Bruton, to move immediately to ensure the Spanish government honoured its EU obligations and freed up roads and motorways for the transportation of goods.
