Golf:Paul Cutler, Alan Dunbar and Kevin Phelan were named by the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) to represent Ireland at the World Amateur Team Championship, otherwise known as the Eisenhower Trophy, in Argentina at the end of October.
Cutler, who is the highest ranked Irish player in the world rankings (30th), captured the Lytham Trophy in May and was named as Ireland’s sole representative on the St Andrews Trophy team that will take on Continental Europe later this month in Milan.
Dunbar lifted the Irish Amateur Open Championship at Royal Dublin in May and represented Ireland at the European Team Championship and Home Internationals this year. The Rathmore golfer also captured the 2010 Willie Gill Order of Merit award.
Phelan, who attends the University of North Florida and grew up in Waterford, is ranked among the top three Irish players in the world and has enjoyed a fantastic season so far.
His record in strokeplay tournaments is strong having recorded 18 sub-par rounds and eight top-10 finishes in the States this year. The highlight of his year was his qualification for the US Open at Pebble Beach. He made his international debut for Ireland at the Home Internationals this year.
The Castle’s Dara Lernihan is non-travelling reserve while Dr Keith Flanagan is the Irish team captain.
The 72-hole strokeplay event will be played at the Buenos Aires & Olivos Golf Clubs from October 29th-31st with the two best scores from three to count for each team each round.
